[Resolved] ‘Fields and Text’ is not showing the top toolbar with Toolset options

This thread is resolved. Here is a description of the problem and solution.

Problem: I am unable to see the Fields and Text popup because the top toolbar is missing from the block editor.

Solution: Look at the top of the page to see the toolbar menu. In the Block Editor settings, there is an option "Top toolbar" that will change the position of the top menu. It will be removed from the individual block editors and displayed at the top of the block editor page in one consolidated menu.

I am trying to do exactly what this tutorial describes:
hidden link

However the top toolbar (for selecting fields and views) is missing when editing this block. Is this a known issue? Are there any workarounds for this?

Hello, are you referring to the toolbar above the Fields and Text block editor? I am attaching a screenshot here.

If so, then I am not aware of a known issue like this. Where I can see the problem on your site?

Hi Christian, that’s exactly what I mean. If you just go to pages and edit the one named ‘vacatures’ you will see that when adding a fields and text block that toolbar is missing. I have tried it on several pages and never got it to work. I can give additional information tomorrow.

Thanks a lot,
Rens

20191230 Hosting test.jpg

Hi Christian,

I have been having some technical issues with my site and I'm pretty sure it has to do with some sort of optimization issues with (one of) the Toolset plugins. Right now the only page that is working is the home page. When I try to load any other page I get a 404 error. I'm not sure whether to continue here or start a new thread so let me know if that's what I should do.

So yesterday I contacted GoDaddy to figure out what's up, maybe I needed to upgrade my hosting plan or something... They conducted a hosting test and noticed very high IO and CPU usage. The also registered 10,000 clicks in one day three days ago. Very strange since the site is still in the design fase. Based on their test they didn't think it was necessary to upgrade the hosting plan but look for a plugin that was probably causing the heavy load/traffic.

So Toolset has also been pretty buggy for me and I can't help but think these issues are related. I started another thread on this a few weeks back which I'll link here:
https://toolset.com/forums/topic/when-designing-a-view-in-block-editor-the-site-slows-down-dramatically/

Updating the plugins did help at the time but I'm still running into some issues. Here's a short summary of the thing I've remembered:

- Fields and Text not showing the aforementioned toolbar
- 'Distance' search filter disappeared out of search filter options (I selected it at the start and it still works though)
- Formatting search fields has no effect (made input boxes rounded but they stayed the default squared)
- When designing a view loop in the Block Editor (bootstrap grid, 1 column) the CPT's under the top one are not displayed correctly (the data is correct but not the alignment compared to the top one)
- When designing a view loop in the Block Editor (bootstrap grid, 1 column) the top CPT is not picking up data from parent post (the ones underneath are though)
- Preview Page is either extremely slow or does not load at all
- When adding a simple shortcode to the view loop that shows the post date as 'X amount of time ago' the site just breaks. All pages just show the header and few other static elements. Header, anything Toolset related is gone. When I remove the shortcode everything returns to normal. Here's a link to my initial support thread: https://toolset.com/forums/topic/shortcode-for-x-amount-of-time-ago-not-working/

I still think Toolset is the best option for me because of the feature set, but at the moment it is literally impossible to work on the site. I hope that you could take a look and figure out what's going on.

Thanks a ton,
Rens

Hi, I'm not able to replicate the problem where the Fields and Text toolbar is missing. I just loaded the Pizza bezorger post in the post editor here: hidden link
I added a Fields and Text block in the post editor area, and I'm attaching a screenshot of what I see. The toolbar looks okay, and when I click the Views button I see the popup appear as expected. If this is not what you're seeing, try clearing your browser cache and testing again. If the problem still occurs, try a different browser, like Chrome or Firefox, and see if the problem still occurs.

As far as the other problems you're experiencing, the first thing I recommend is to either disable the Elementor plugin or disable the Layouts plugin. One of those two plugins should not be active, because the two systems are incompatible and will lead to unexpected results when activated together. We have more information about using Elementor and Toolset together available here: https://toolset.com/documentation/user-guides/using-toolset-with-elementor-page-builder/
Let's see if this makes the site more usable for now, then we can move on to address other issues.

Hi Christian,

Interesting you couldn’t replicate the issue. I’ll have a look later, but maybe it just didn’t work in the block editor? I will let you know!

Now I don’t think I was using Layouts for anything, just Views and the Block editor. Could that still cause issues?

Thanks!

#1431685

Yes, you should deactivate the Layouts plugin even if you do not plan to use it for anything.

Hi Christian,

I disabled the Layouts plugin. This hasn't fixed the 404 problem. What would be the next logical step?

Also, here's a screencap of the initial issue I described. As you can see the toolbar is indeed missing. This is in a view loop on the 'Alle vacatures' page.

Thanks again,
Rens

I've been able to solve the 404 issue just by going editing the page a little. That seems to be fixed now!

Hi Christian,

Hope you had a great Christmas and New Year's. 😉

Here's an update. The site and the back-end have improved a bit after editing a form which had a bug in it. I think this was caused by a maps related field.

I am however still nog getting the Fields and Text toolbar though. I'll add a screencap of editing a CPT template.

query to display brother posts issue2.PNG
query to display brother posts issue.PNG

Another one I don't get. I'm trying to display brother posts in a template but I came across this quirk. When adding a query filter I get the message that nothing is selected in the Content Selection section but clearly there is. Because of this I'm getting the wrong output in the backend and 'No items found' in the front end... In the second screencap you can see the way I set up the query filter.

Look at the top of your screenshot, and you will see the top toolbar. There is a setting in the Block Editor called "Top Toolbar" that causes this behavior. See the screenshot here. Deactivate "Top Toolbar" mode to move the menu closer to the block during editing.

I have split your other question into a separate ticket.

Thanks! Wow, how did I miss that... 😅
