I am trying to: Use visual composer to create a lay-out

I expected to see: The button for using visual composer

Instead: It does appear, likely because Visual Composer is not found even though it is installed as part of my template.

Dear Gregor,

You can use visual composer to design content template, for example, you can try this:
Dashboard-> Toolset-> Content templates
Find and edit the content template, then you will be able to see a button "Edit with Visual Composer",

Thanks for the reply, but the issue is that I cannot see the button for using visual composer, despite it being installed.

There isn't such a button "Edit with Visual Composer" when you edit a content template cell in the layout, if you agree we can take it as a feature request, but you should be able to see the button "Edit with Visual Composer" when you edit the content template directly, see my answer:

If the problem persists, please try these:
1) deactivate other plugins and switch to wordpress default theme, and test again
2) Provide a copy of your website by follow our document:
https://toolset.com/faq/provide-supporters-copy-site/

I need to duplicate same problem and debug it in my localhost, thanks
