Q2) I'm not completely clear on what (1) is for?
The step 1) is creating a custom shortcode to hide some extra div, output from view's shortcode:
[wpv-layout-start] and [wpv-layout-end]
You can see it in view:

Thanks for the details, the view in your website "Communication in last 3 months":

So I edit it, section "Loop Output", modified it from:
