I am trying to: have a photo uploaded

I expected to: be able to display the photo in layout or view

Instead, I got: but it only displays the link

So, how do I do a File upload, and then have the image show on the page rather than the link?

Dear Rick,

How do you setup and display the custom image field?
I suggest you setup it as a custom image field with Types plugin, see our doument:
https://toolset.com/documentation/user-guides/using-custom-fields/
In the screenshot:
hidden link
There is an option "Image".

And use Types shortcode [types] to display the image field, see our document:
https://toolset.com/documentation/customizing-sites-using-php/functions/#image
