Hi, I'm trying to import child posts with associations.
The posts are being imported correctly, but when I try to import the associations approximately 25% can't be imported, the error message is "can't find a parent post with title: " . The parent posts for all the titles that can't be imported exist with the correct titles (as they appear in _toolset_associations_plant-with-complaint-list).
Any ideas why I'm receiving these errors?
Thanks for any help
Hello and thank you for contacting the Toolset support.
I wonder what plugin are you using for the import? Is it about the Toolset import utility or using a 3rd party plugin?
Then, can you check what posts or parent posts were not imported? Maybe they have a special character that causes inconsistencies between how it is saved in the WordPress database and how it is on the csv file(such as & which becomes "&" in HTML entities)?
Would you like to reproduce this issue on one of our test site? If yes, let me know and I'll prepare one for you.
Hi Jamal,
Thanks very much for getting back to me.
I'm using the csv importer plugin by Denis Kobozev, it's free and has served me well over the years, even though it hasn't been updated for 6 years - csv file formats haven't changed over that time either.
Yes you're right it seems discrepancies have crept in between the parent post titles and the child posts toolset associations - like extra spaces - I'm slowly dealing with those. I also have "&"s in the parent post titles and noticed many of those where rejected when importing the child post associations. The titles with ampersands already exist in my WordPress custom posts, so what do you recommend I do to avoid these ampersands causing problems? Are there any other special characters or combinations I need to look out for?
Thanks for you help
David
Hi Christian, Thanks for you suggestions. Is it possible to update these post titles in place - replace " & " with and or do I need to delete the posts - and all their taxonomies and reload the corrected csv file.
Thanks for your help
Hello David,
Can you reproduce this issue in one of our test sites with a minimal file. Let me then analyze it and find out what's causing those entries to not import.

You can use the Toolset Module Manager to import your custom post types and relationships https://toolset.com/download/toolset-module-manager/
Hi Jamal,
I'm working on correcting the problems you and Christian mentioned. I'm testing this on a localhost site, I'll try and reload the parent custom posts, and then the child posts with the toolset associations. If that's not successful I'll use the test site you sent me.
Keep you informed.
Thanks
Hi, Trying to reload all parent and child posts.
My problem was ampersand (&) in parent title and therefore also in child post _toolset_associations field
So I replaced all &s with "and" deleted all original posts and child post and tried reloading the corrected posts and child posts.
Problem now is when I try Toolset > import/export > Associations it has the old incorrect _toolset_associations.
Please can you explain how I can delete all the old associations before reloading the corrected child posts
Thanks
I am really sorry, but I do not understand what do you mean by Problem now is when I try Toolset > import/export > Associations it has the old incorrect _toolset_associations.
Can you elaborate more? Add screenshots?
It would be great that you record a screencast of your import process, this way, I can exactly what you do.
Hi Jamal,
Sorry I wasn't clear.
I've been using a couple of plugins trying to get the toolset associations to register so that the child posts are associated with their parent posts - the plugins I've been experimenting with are: the csv importer plugin by Denis Kobozev and wp all import (free version).
Currently after loading the parent and child posts (shown in attached screenshots) successfully, there are no associations to load.
So that's the problem, hope it's clearer
Thanks
The WP All Import plugin will need the Toolset Addon to be able to import data into Toolset. Check this article about the import plugin that can be used with Toolset https://toolset.com/course-lesson/how-to-import-content-into-wordpress-using-csv/
Can you try the import in the test site that I provided?
Please share a sample CSV file, so we can try the import?
Can you also record a screencast of your attempt?
Hi Jamal,
In the above screen shots the parent post contains a post_relation_slug column and the child posts contain a toolset_associations column containing the parent post titles.
Can you please confirm that this method of importing associations still works with Types 3.4.1 'cause I see threads in this forum suggesting that the import method for importing associations has changed, if so what is the correct format and column headings and what do I need to enter in the column in order to import associations.
Thanks for any help
Hi, I have an old copy of the Toolset Types add-on - Beta version for WP All Import. Can I use this to import relationships with Types 3.4.
I only need the Toolset Types add-on and have a lifetime membership with Toolset, is there a cheaper way of purchasing this add-on?
Thanks
Hello David, Indeed, the relationships database scheme has been changed in Toolset Types 3.4.0. But, as you have been able to import some posts and their relationships(your first message), I can be confident to say that the import still works with Toolset Types > 3.4.0.
I encourage you to read carefully our documentation about the CSV Importer plugin:
- https://toolset.com/course-lesson/importing-content-from-csv-with-post-relationships/
After releasing 3.4.0, the old WP All Import addon for Toolset was not able to import relationships. The WP All Import team has released another version that fixes the issue. So, I imagine that the version that you hold does not do the job. On the other hand, I might suggest that you build a website with Types 3.3, perform the import with WP All Import. Then update Toolset Types. The Toolset migration will take care of upgrading the database scheme.
If all the above does not help, please reproduce the issue on the test site that I provided and I'll see how I can help.
Hi Jamal,
I've setup my site and tried to import custom posts - plants, and complaints - on the test site you provided.
Seems I didn't do it right as all taxonomies are missing, but wp all import informed me all posts (parent plants and child complaints) where imported successfully, when I went to toolset export/import > associations I'm informed there are no associations to import - there's also no errors, would very much appreciate if you could tell me why the child posts are not getting connected to their parents.
Thanks
Hi Jamal.
I think there's a problem with my wordpress database (the toolset associations are corrupted), please could you allow me to send you access details so you can check.
Thanks
