“Best Custom Search” Competition Winners

December 22, 2015

Three weeks ago, we launched the first Toolset competition, titled The Best Custom Search. Today we are happy to announce the winners.

I’m not complaining, but the people submitting the sites to us didn’t make our lives easy. We saw great sites with nice designs and polished functionality. It was hard picking the best ones. Every custom search that we saw looked different, worked differently and displayed the results in a unique way. It’s absolutely great to see what WordPress developers achieve with Toolset.

So, here are the results…

Loveliest Design

Our judges, Peter and Agnes, were unanimous about the site with the prettiest design – Things to do in Dublin for kids. The site is amazingly designed for kids and the search filter integrates with the overall design beautifully.

Winner: David

Prize: a free WPML account

Best Use of Toolset Features

We decided that Fulldome Database website demonstrates the best use of Toolset features.

The search panel allows to make incremental refinements by displaying only relevant options. It highlights previously-selected filters in a clear way and allows to narrow down the results. The ‘keywords’ filter is especially nice and integrates with the other filters elegantly. Results update on-the-fly using AJAX and use pagination. You have to agree that it’s a pretty awesome site and uses Toolset plugins to their limits.

Winner: Carloalberto

Prize: warm (virtual) hug from OnTheGoSystems – Carloalberto already has Lifetime accounts for WPML and for Toolset!

Most Surprising Concept

We honestly got surprised by Smarter Dancer.

The site allows to search by ZIP codes close to your area. This is something that Toolset doesn’t come with, but they added it using Types API. Try it yourselves. Enter your ZIPcode and you will find results nearby.

Winner: Ed

Prize: a free WPML account

What Next?

We are thankful for everyone who submitted their sites to this competition. If you didn’t win anything, I hope that you still got something out of this, in the form of inspiration and ideas for your next projects.

We upgraded the winners’ accounts and notified them.

After the New Year, we will continue with the next competitions. It’s fun for us and we hope that you’ll continue to participate.

BTW, right after the holidays, you can expect a wave of new releases from Toolset. Upcoming development includes:

  • Production release of the Toolset Google Maps integration (going out of beta)
  • Integration between Layouts plugin and TwentySixteen, TwentyFifteen, Avada, Customizr, Divi, Cornerstone (added to the Genesis integration that was recently announced)
  • CRED Commerce support for users (you will be able to charge payment for registering users – great for membership sites)

All this is coming at the beginning of January.
