Tell us what you are trying to do?
I am trying to edit the WordPress Archives for some new custom post types, however they are coming up as the standard (classic) editor instead of the blocks editor. In settings > General > editing experience it is set to use Blocks only.

I tried changing it to show both, and then set the editor to blocks for archives, but it still only wants to use shortcodes.

I have WP-Bakery installed, which I only want to be able to use for editing the content of posts/pages.

The site is a subdomain of the domain to which toolset is registered, so it does show that it's not able to connect to toolset for updates, but I didn't think that would affect how it works. The site will be moved to the main domain after it's complete, this is the redevelopment site.

Is there any documentation that you are following?
I started watching the following tutorial, however it shows the editing experience as blocks, and mine is showing me shortcodes.
https://toolset.com/course-lesson/creating-a-custom-archive-page/

Is there a similar example that we can see?
No

Hi Alison,

Thank you for getting in touch.

In a case like this I would recommend checking to see if there are any other plugins that can be enabling the classic editor.

I know that for some page builders like Visual Composer and Divi they can enable the classic editor which can cause this issue.

What I would do here is to temporarily disable all the non-toolset plugins and checking again to see if the classic editor is still enabled.

If the block editor appears, we know that it is a case where another plugin is enabling the classic editor.

Thanks,
Shane

Thanks, I've tested the plugins, and the one that is causing the problem is WP-Bakery, which is a huge problem since the entire existing site has a lot of content created in it. Toolset does state that it works with WP-Bakery so I am not sure why it's not working for me.

Hi Alison,

You can actually tell WPBakery not to disable gutenburg.

To do this follow the instructions below.
1. Open your WordPress Admin Dashboard;
2. Navigate to Visual Composer – Settings;
3. Locate the Gutenberg settings and select enable (on);
4. Save changes.

Please let me know if this helps.
Thanks,
Shane

no, this hasn't helped as Gutenberg was NOT disabled in my WP Bakery settings.

At the moment I am juggling this whole thing by turning WP Bakery off to edit the wordpress archives templates and then on again to view. It's a massive faff.

Unfortunately it doesn't help, as Gutenberg was not disabled in WP Bakery. At the moment I am just having to deactivate WP Bakery in order to edit the archive template then re-activate it to view. It's a bit of a faff.

I've also typed this reply 3 times now and it keeps disappearing.

Hi Alison,

Would you mind allowing me to have admin access to the website so that I can have a more detailed look at this one for you ?

I've enabled the private fields for your next response.

Thanks,
Shane

Hi Alison,

When I checked the site and the archives, without making any changes to the website i'm seeing the gutenburg editor being loaded for the archives. See Screenshot

I've re-enabled the WPBakery Page Builder and tried creating a new archive with the gutenburg editor and I was able to.

Can you run a test on your end ?

Thanks,
Shane

Sadly no, when I enable WP-Bakery the attached image is what I see. I also tried in Firefox in case it was browser specific (safari) and it looked the same there.

Hi Alison,

Not sure what is happening here, however I find that if you create a new archive it will open in the Block Editor.

Can you rebuild this archive as it should now open in the block editor even with the WPBakery plugin active. I've also tested this on my end by creating a test archive and the archive opens with the Gutenburg editor.

Thanks,
Shane
