ordering events in list view

hi-
im using a view to display events from the 'tribe events calendar' which is working very well with one exception. i cant get the order to be determined by the start date of the event. there are single events along with recurring events which complicates the issue, but so long as the start date can be used to determine the order of the list we should be in good shape.

at present, i've got the view ordered by 'Field-_EventStartDate' descending and ascending and i've also tried all three options that follow: as a native custom field, as a string, as a number.

how can i get these items to appear in order (most recent first) according to its start date?
