[Resolved] Importing Content

This thread is resolved. Here is a description of the problem and solution.

Problem:

Migrate websites from live site to development site.

Solution:

I suggest you try to migrate full site(files and databases) from live website to a new development site(different domain name), and do the development work in the dev site, after all things are done, migrate full site from dev site back to original live website.

This will be able to avoid any files or data missing when you importing/exporting the website, and avoid other conflicts(difference in the shortcodes)

Background: We created a test-development site with the Themeforest theme “THE ISSUE 08.” Once it is fully developed, it will replace our existing publicly viewed site, which was created with Themeforest’s “SmartMag” theme.
We used “Tools > Export” on our existing SmartMag site to export the Contact Forms. But now we must export “All Contents” since that is the only option which also exports “comments, custom fields, terms, navigation menus, and custom posts.” (We can export pages, posts, and other items separately, as we did with our Contact Forms — but all elements will be exported with All Contacts.)
Questions:

MORE BACKGROUND--The existing public site, which we want to replicate and then redesign on our test site -- has an overwhelming number of items created with Toolset -- 11 Content Templates, 7 Post Types, 11 Post Field Groups (one of which, Advertisers, has 263 fields; others have anywhere from 15 or more), plus 247 Views, 5 Taxonomies, and some 1900 pages. So it is a large site. Setting it up originally took several months. We would like to shorten that time, of course. Therefore ...

QUESTION 1: We would like to import "All Contents" to the new test site, since that import is said to include all of our "posts, pages, comments, custom fields, terms, navigation menus, and custom posts." Q--However, will it import the various Toolset items -- Content Templates, Post Types, Post Field Groups, etc?

QUESTION 2:  If we export and then import "All Contents" from the current public site to the test site --  and if the shortcodes are different (SmartMag v2.3 is the existing site, the test site is THE ISSUE 08 v1.4.6) -- what will happen? That is , what will the pages look like? Can we run the risk? We will back up beforehand, of course.)

QUESTION 3: If the difference in the shortcodes do produce significant differences in the test site -- is there a way to determine how to correct that? Perhaps some way of comparing the shortcodes and addressing their differences in some way?

QUESTION 4: I could not import one of our Content Templates, since we had not yet created that particular Content Template on our new site. However, the online lessons I found seem to indicate that -- to create a Content Template -- you must already have created a particular group of pages (like the "Personal Trainers" in the Toolset video). Q--Do UI indeed have to first create a group of sample pages before I am able to create a Content Template with Toolset for that set of pages?

QUESTION 5: Given these considerations and the size of the site we want to replicate-and-then-redesign -- how would you suggest we proceed?

Hello,

In your case, I suggest you try to migrate full site(files and databases) from live website to a new development site(different domain name), and do the development work in the dev site, after all things are done, migrate full site from dev site back to original live website.

This will be able to avoid any files or data missing when you importing/exporting the website, and avoid other conflicts(difference in the shortcodes)

See our document:

We initially tried to clone our existing publicly viewed site (manhattanbride.com) with Duplicator. It did not work, seemingly because our site was too large. So we began the very time-consuming task of locating and then deleting unused or duplicate images as well as our digital magazines. we ultimately reduced the site's size from over 30GB to less than 16GB. (It is a large site.)

But we still could not copy it with Duplicator. So we moved to Duplicator Pro. Still could not clone the site.

Then our server began emailing back and forth with Duplicator. Their suggestions did not help either. So after weeks and weeks of this unproductive effort -- we decided to build the site from scratch.

HOWEVER -- I will forward your reply and your link to our server and see if your link has anything that we did not yet try.

If there is nothing new that we can attempt -- I will get back to you, probably with the same questions which I had yesterday.

You can also try to migrate the website manually, it does not need other plugins, see the document I mentioned above:

section "Manual migration of the WordPress site".

My issue is resolved now. Thank you!
