Check this video, it explains how to use the grid block to display the search filters on a column and the results on another hidden link
You can use the same way to put the filters in columns.

I was able to create a three column grid with checkbox filters, but it was too long. I added played with the width to scroll instead, but now the scrollbar doesn't show up on mobile and I am unsure why. It scrolls, but no scroll bar. hidden link

I would say that it is related to the theme styling. Once you start scrolling the scroll bar appears for the checkboxes filter. Check this screenshot hidden link

Can you switch temporarily to a default theme such as TwentyTwenty and check if the same results are reproduced.
