[Resolved] Difference between Content Templates and Template Layouts for CPTs

This thread is resolved. Here is a description of the problem and solution.

Problem: Please explain the difference between Content Templates and Template Layouts.

Solution: Generally, if you're using the Layouts plugin you should use a Template Layout to define a design for the main content area of your custom post type. If you're not using the Layouts plugin, you should use a Content Template.

I'm trying to understand the difference between using a Content Template for a CPT and using a Layout Template for the same CPT.

I thought I understood the difference before, with the Layout Template also able to change the Header, Sidebar, etc areas.

But in light of this recent change: https://toolset.com/2017/05/we-want-to-improve-the-integration-between-toolset-and-divi/

I don't understand anymore what is the difference and what are the parameters to use to decide which one to use to display CPTs 🙁

Would it be possible to explain it more, or point me towards links explaining this?

Many thanks!

Best,
- Julien

The document you're referring to is specific to the Divi theme, so if you're on another theme it may not be entirely applicable. We've found that most users don't use Layouts to control the entire site, only the main content area. That is possible with most themes out-of-the-box, and no additional code is required. The Toolset Starter Theme, however, is fully integrated, meaning that you can use Layouts to design the entire page including header and footer.

Generally, if you're using the Layouts plugin you should use a Template Layout to define a design for the main content area of your custom post type. If you're not using the Layouts plugin, you should use a Content Template.

Does this help clear things up?

Yes, all clear now, many thanks Christian 🙂
