Deprecated: block_categories is deprecated since version 5.8.0!

This thread is resolved. Here is a description of the problem and solution.

Problem: I'm seeing a PHP Deprecation notice in the logs and also a critical error related to memory.

Solution: Update the wp-config.php file to increase the alotted memory for PHP. This should prevent the critical error:

define('WP_MEMORY_LIMIT', '256M');
define( 'WP_MAX_MEMORY_LIMIT', '256M' );

Hello,

When trying to edit "certain" posts under news category, I get:
There has been a critical error on this website.

Error log shows:
Deprecated: block_categories is deprecated since version 5.8.0! Use block_categories_all instead.

When I deactivate Toolset Blocks, I am able to edit the post.

I have updated Toolset Blocks and Types to latest version.

WordPress version:
5.8
PHP Version:
7.4.16

Hi there

When you say the error log shows the deprecation notice, I suspect you are simply talking about a JS message in the browser console. Such a deprecation notice will have no effect on your site.

If you get a critical error, that sounds like a PHP error on the server, and you'll need to check the debug logs.

If you haven't already, turn on the debug log by editing your wp-config.php file and change the line with WP_DEBUG like so:

define('WP_DEBUG', true);
define('WP_DEBUG_LOG', true);
define('WP_DEBUG_DISPLAY', false);
define('WP_DISABLE_FATAL_ERROR_HANDLER',true);

That will create a debug.log file in your /wp-content/ directory which you can examine in any text editor. Try visiting the same page where you observe the problem and then inspect the log to see details of the error.

That should help identify the problem.

Hi, it looks like there are two things going on here.

1. There is a lack of memory available on your server, which is the source of the critical error. You can try increasing the amount of memory available by implementing code like this in your site's wp-config.php file:

define('WP_MEMORY_LIMIT', '256M');
define( 'WP_MAX_MEMORY_LIMIT', '256M' );

Scan the file first to make sure these two limits are not defined already. If they are already defined, change the limit values in those existing definitions to be at least 256M. If these limits are not defined yet, copy those two lines and paste them in to your file just before it says "That's all, stop editing". Upload the updated wp-config.php file back to your server and test editing the same post once again.

In some cases this code alone is sufficient for raising the available memory. In other cases not, and you'll need to get your hosting company involved to help allocate more memory for your site.

2. There is a PHP deprecation notice triggered when Toolset plugins are active. I'm able to replicate this problem on my local test site when Types, Blocks, WooCommerce, and Toolset WooCommerce Blocks are all active if I edit any post. I'm escalating this issue to my 2nd tier support team for further investigation. This PHP deprecation notice should not have a serious negative impact on your site. I think it's just a coincidence that the memory error caused a critical issue while this PHP deprecation notice is also being logged. The two are most likely unrelated, but we need to address the deprecation issue regardless. I'll let you know once I have more information about that from my 2nd tier support team.
