Tell us what you are trying to do?
I have created a site of contractors and when an enquiry is made about a specific contractor I want them to reference them by the post_id.

I have set up the custom search but will not work for the post_id.

If this is not possible, can I assign a unique number to each contractor and use this as a search.

Hello. Thank you for contacting the Toolset support.

Well - yes, the second idea is good. You should create a custom field that should hold the unique ID value and then try to add custom search filter for this custom field.

Hi,
I have created the custom field.
How do I create a unique number for the custom field and then assign this number to the custom field.
When the record is being created?

Well - you might want to assign the same post_id value to the custom field?
