On the Company Details page, I want to add a text area where I can put some comments before the search facility.
I tried adding a row at the bottom of the 'template for companies' page and then tried to drag it to the top of the layout page but this will not stay there. It returns to the original position which was 'Back to previous page'. I have now deleted the row.
It appears on the template there is no space to add an additional row above row 1 and I cannot find a way to move the row down.

Thanks for the details, I have done below modification in your website:
1) Edit the layout "Template for Companies"
2) add a new row just after the first row, drag the visual editor cell of first row into the new row, then the first row is empty
3) add a new visual editor cell into the first row, with text: This is the new visual editor cell
Please test again, check if it is what you want.

This is not showing before the search box on the company details page. I have cleared the cache but the issue is still there. The field is not displaying.
What and where is the "search box on the company details page" you mentioned above?
If it is the search box in the right sidebar, you will need to customize the widgets here:
Dashboard-> Appearance-> Widgets
see the item "Search" in "Main Sidebar"
It's the Toolset search box above the A to Z listing. I cannot see the text box you added on the page.

You are using "Beaver Builder" to design this page, so the problem is about add a row in the "Beaver Builder", can you confirm it?
If it is, I don't think Toolset supprot form is not the good place for this problem

2) drag the new row to the top place.
