[Resolved] WordPress 5.6 Update – When Saving Post Edits, WP Editor Diverts to New Layout

I am trying to:
Save or edit an existing post.

Link to a page where the issue can be seen:
This is not happening on the pages exposed to the public. It's happening within the WordPress dashboard.

I expected to see:
The post/page being saved.

Instead, I got:
The post/page does save. But I am then immediately diverted to the Edit Layout screen - and a new layout has been created.

This is also happening if I am in post/page edit mode, and I go down to edit a custom field.

That is very odd, but oddly reproducible.

I see from your debug info that you have out-of-date versions of Views and Layouts, which are mixed with the latest versions of WordPress and Types.

That's understandable, as Views and Layouts have been temporarily removed from the custom Toolset installer which is being redesigned, and need to be updated manually.

You can download the latest versions from toolset.com/account/downloads.

You can then upload these zip files on the add new plugins page, and they will overwrite the existing plugins.

But! On my test site with the same versions as you have installed, I couldn't access the plugins page itself, which was also redirecting to the Layouts page. So you would need to use FTP to rename the Layouts folder so that it deactivates for you to be able to visit the plugins page.

Sorry about this, I'm in touch with the developers and installer team to expedite a solution, but in your case the above will resolve the problem.

I updated Views and Layouts to the up-to-date versions. However, the issue is still present.

This seems to be a more serious issue than I thought. There seems to be an abundance of triggers that lead to WordPress jumping to the Layout creation/edit page. It's rendering the WordPress dashboard extremely difficult to use - and needlessly creating layout after layout.

I think it will now be a browser caching issue that is troubling you, can you clear your browser cache and see if that stops this?

If needs be, double-check in a different browser than you are used to using.

Please let us know how you get on, if clearing the browser cache doesn't resolve it, then yes, it's a more serious problem.

I had already cleared out the cache on the web server. I've also cleared the browser cache. It's still happening.

Hi Nigel. Looks like that has cleared out the remaining remnants of that issue. Thanks for your help resolving. If this is the only issue that my sites suffer as a result of the move to 5.6, I'll be quite happy.

You use an optimize plugin to compress/minify JS, can you disable that and re-test?

If that makes no different, can I get a copy of your site to install locally to test?

On my local test site when I checked this after an earlier report and was able to reproduce it, the problem was resolved simply by upgrading to the current versions.

You can share a duplicator package (or all in one wp migration) via dropbox or similar here, it will be visible only to us. Be sure to exclude the uploads folder to keep the file size down.
