I am trying to: publish, post, or update a page or a post. Pressing the publish, post or update button causes it to go into the "clicked" state, but the action (publish, post or update) does not happen.

I had my hosting company wipe wordpress completely, do a fresh install, and then I reloaded the Tools and other plugins, and the Generate Press theme.

To see if I could find the problem, I disabled all browser add-ons, then began disabling each plug in until posts, updates, and publish worked properly - it appears the Types plugin is causing the problem. I did a second test and disable all plugins, then activated one at a time until the problem restarted - and again, when Types was reactivated, I could not publish, post or update.

I then reinstalled Types in case there was a issue with the installation process. But, still the same issue.

I've looked through the forums, but do not see anyone with a similar current issue.

Hi Robert,

can I take a copy of your site and test it locally?

That way I can rule out that it is a server issue, and I may be able to identify the problem. (You are right, we haven't got other users reporting this.)

I will mark your next reply as private so that I can get log-in credentials from you—you may want to create a temporary admin user for me to use that you can later delete. And be sure to have a current backup of your site, even though I don't intend to make any changes other than to temporarily add a backup plugin to take a snapshot of the site.

Hi Robert

I observed the problem on your site, including in the context of disabling the other plugins and using a default theme, so I've made a duplicate of your site to test locally.

I'll set that up and get back to you.

Hi Robert

Quick update. I didn't spot it with your theme/plugin combination, but editing the sample page, for example, it can't be submitted because... there is a required custom field (capability title) which is not being set.

There is a conflict here somewhere, because in your set up the post field box is not being shown, so you cannot enter a capability title. You can see it if you switch to a default theme and disable other plugins.

I'll track down what is the source of the conflict and get back to you.

That is interesting.... I saw some forum posts about required fields that were hidden causing this behavior. So, I looked through my custom post types (case studies, capabilities, etc....) and didn't see anything hidden per se. There is a parent child relationship between 'services' and 'capabilities' but I didn't understand where that could be causing the issue because the behavior was happening on all posts, publish and update actions...

One other thing.... technically, all the 'required' fields could be set so that they are not required. This wouldn't really impact the functionality - occasionally a field in one of the custom post types might be left empty.

One other note that may be helpful....

Custom post types: Service Categories, Capabilities, Blueprints, Case Studies
Relationships: Service Categories (parent) to Capabilities (child, many)
Capabilities (parent) to Blueprints (child, one-to-one)
Case studies (standalone CPT)

Update...
I looked at all the CPTs and removed all validation requirements and now all posts, publish and update actions are behaving normally. Not sure which CPT and field with validation were causing the problem, but this seems to be the root cause of the posts, publish and updates failing. Not sure which of the CPT/fields were causing the problem.

Hi Robert

It seems there was no conflict.

I was trying (and failing) to publish the Sample Page on your site by way of testing, and as you said in your initial post, the Update/Publish button seemed inoperative.

After some testing I realised it was because you had a compulsory custom field for capability title (which was not assigned to any one post type and was therefore being applied to all post types). The meta box for the custom field was missing on the edit screen, and so the validation error was not visible, hence the "mystery" over why the publish button would not work.

I took it to be a conflict with one of your plugins or theme that was preventing the custom field meta box being displayed, but it turns out the answer was rather simpler. As you can see in the screenshot, in the screen options tab at the top of the page "Capabilities" was unchecked, which is why the capabilities fields were not being shown on the page.

I notice this morning that you have removed the required setting for the field, so you would be able to submit posts any way. In any case, on the capabilities field group you should specify which post types it applies to so that it is only shown on those edit pages.
