Site crashed with 'white screen of death' while updating Toolset Types.
To get the site backup the web host renamed the Types plugin folder, so site is back now but without Types content. I daren't just rename the existing folder via FTP as I'm assuming it will crash again.
How do I reinstall Types and still keep the data / content and settings that were there before? Hoping we don't need to do a full site restore from backup?
The first thing to do is get your site working again.
You can download previous versions of Types from the changelog link here: toolset.com/account/downloads
If you don't know what version you had working before, I don't want to put you back in the position of installing a Types version and it failing.
Most hosts provide staging sites where you can test updates without it affecting your live site, but it doesn't sound like you have one.
If you want to provide me with a copy of your site as described in this document then I can install it locally, confirm which version of Types it is okay to re-install, and also look at why the current version has produced a fatal error: hidden link
I'll mark your next reply as private so you can share the location of the backup files.
I went to install the duplicator package and it warned that it was created on a server with PHP 5.2.
That's a very old version and the minimum required version for Toolset is in line with the minimum required version for WordPress, which is currently 5.6.20, and is likely to increase to version 7 by the end of the year.
You should ask your host to update your PHP version to 5.6.20, and you may want to consider using a host that keeps the required versions up-to-date automatically and provides a staging environment for testing.
Using PHP 5.2 is almost certainly the reason your site experienced a fatal error.
I don't know of a version that works with PHP 5.2 without going through a process of trial and error of installing older versions and re-testing until it breaks, which is not too helpful if you are not able to easily add/remove plugins using FTP.
Given that the minimum version required for WordPress is 5.6.20 it should be straightforward for the host to upgrade PHP version (if you have a choice I'd recommend something up-to-date but not cutting-edge like PHP 7.1 or 7.2), and I'd suggest pursuing that and if they are unable to in a reasonable timeframe we can try older versions of Types.
Many thanks for your help - I have contacted the hosting provider, in the short term it may be best to restore from backup to get everything working again and then look to upgrade the PHP version following that.
Doesn't really help, I'm afraid, as the minimum required version is 5.6.20, although it may explain why the problem only occurred recently and not some time ago.
Once you have asked the host to update PHP you can confirm here whether you are able to successfully update Types (I'm pretty sure you will).
