[Resolved] Pages with restricted access still showing to all roles

This thread is resolved. Here is a description of the problem and solution.

Problem: Pages that should be restricted by Post Group are showing up for Guests when I choose to display the 404 page instead in Access Controls > Post Group settings.

Solution: Check to be sure Post Type permissions are not causing a problem with Post Group permissions.

I am using Access to create post groups to restrict access to registered members only. I created the post group, added pages to it, and set a 404 page to show when there is no read permission.

When I test this out on the front-end as a guest, the page I am restricting access to (post-a-gun), is still available to anyone.

Hi, I'll try to help. First, we recommend choosing either Beaver Builder or Toolset Layouts, but not both. When both are active, there are likely to be problems where both plugins are competing for control of the page design. Please try this test first:
- Deactivate the Toolset Layouts plugin
- Visit the Post a Gun page again as a Guest not logged in.
- If the 404 page is displayed as expected, we found the source of the conflict and you should continue building your site without Layouts.
- If the 404 page is not displayed as expected, activate a default theme like Twenty Seventeen and deactivate all plugins except Types, Views and Access. If you need to activate a Maintenance Mode plugin during testing, that's fine.
- If the 404 page is shown as expected for Guests, reactivate your theme and plugins one by one until the conflict is revealed.

Please let me know what you find out and we can go from there.

Hi Christian,

Thanks for looking into this.

I followed your instructions, first starting with deactivating only Layouts. The problem occurred still, the page loaded anyway, and no 404 page showed.

Next, I activated TwentySeventeen theme and deactivated all of the plugins except for Views, Types, and Access. The problem actually still occurs even under those conditions.

I have left the site like that in case you'd like to log in and test this on your own.

Thanks,
Ellis

Okay I logged in and checked your Access settings, and it appears that Guests had permission to see Pages, which was overriding the setting for your post group. I removed that permission, and specified the 404 page to show instead. Then I edited the Post a Gun page, deleted the post group setting, saved the post, then re-applied the post group setting. It seems like this has resolved the problem. Can you confirm?
