When editing a date field it would be super nice if it was set to the current value of the field rather than the current date.

Example: If I have a date field that's set to March 3, 2003 but I need to edit that field and change it to March 4, 2003, when I click to edit the field, it will be set to the current date, which results in more messing around than it should. If the field was set to the current value, I'd make one click and be done.

WIth the clear button, there shouldn't be a need for it to work this way.

Right, with the clear button you can reset to the current date, and with the edit action you would expect to see the calendar with the set date, it makes sense.
