Tell us what you are trying to do?
I'm trying to use Toolset to build a members directory site where users have extended profiles with additional bios, links, images, etc. ... kinda like LinkedIn. So would users register as regular WP users and would I try to extend the existing WP Users structure with custom fields to hold all the additional user information? Or would I create a new post type and how would I link the user account to the new post type?

Is there any documentation that you are following?
I'm new to Toolset so I'm trying to learn as much as I can. I've made it most of the way through Directory/Classified sites and Membership sites tutorials as well as some of your other documentation.

Is there a similar example that we can see?
LinkedIn is the closest example I can think of.

What is the link to your site?
hidden link

Hello. Thank you for contacting the Toolset support.

Yes - I suggest, you should create a new post type "Member Profile" and you will need to make sure that when you create a new user, you will require to add new post to post type "Member Profile".

In addition to that, you will require to set the user as the author of the "Member Profile" post, that is how you will be able to link the user to the "Member Profile" post.
