At the moment I am just playing around with Blocks to see if I should indeed switch over from views.
1) Content template for woocommerce products. Problem with setting padding as it doesn't seem to work. Have a product gallery, floating to left, but other fields butt right up against it. On gallery block turn Margin / Padding on. enter 20px for padding right - on front end nothing happens.
2) How do you do a slide show that is for a page?
3) How do you do a slide show or other 'view' that is for a widget?
1. I need more information here. Steps how you replicate this, or a copy of the site so I can see it an play with the setup you made. There are some known issues with styling that are solved in the currently available beta release of Blocks, which could resolve them, I can check that in the same shot. Best is a Duplicate for this (see https://toolset.com/faq/provide-supporters-copy-site/)
2. You can create a View, and then paginate the View with Automatic AJAX pagination, practically the same way as you'd do it in Classic Views, but you'd do it in blocks, meaning, you need to edit a page and add a View block, then follow the GUIs instructions to complete the settings. The Block Inspector will help you control the Views settings such as pagination and ajax settings
3. You can create a Widget View with a View created in Blocks just like before. You would have to create the View in a page or post, that is the only difference. Later, that View will be available to be inserted as a Widget with the WP Views widget.
Can you send me more details for #1 and let me know if the other points are clear?
Thanks!
Thanks Beda.
Unfortunately I'm going to give up on blocks. I've just spent too much time trying to get it to do what I did easily in Views and being unsuccessful.
I did look at the View block to try and make a slider, but it only shows to do grids and columns and I didn't get anywhere at all!
Regarding point (1). I'm using a Genesis child theme and the formats simply do not change things. For instance I changed the colour and size of the product price, it showed it when editing the template the back-end but not on the front end. I reverted to default WP theme, and the changes showed in the front end. However, the padding still didn't work. I just don't have the time or patience to persevere with blocks.
One thing that does concern me. If I keep just using the original views, is Toolset going to be maintaining that forever? I don't think I could cope if you stop maintaining it and it then eventually stops working!!
Eventually, the Repeating Fields / Gallery Block is of more use to you.
With this, you can add many images to a post in a repeating field and then easily display those as a slider.
With the View block, you'd just choose an unformatted output and then make sure to paginate with ajax by one, as you do in classic views too
Adding blocks (like single fields, or images, or else) to that loop then can help display images, or else, and since this paginated by one, it'll be a slider (if using AJAX automatic pagination like in a classic view)
I could set up an example for you to look at if you want?
Related to #1 as you elaborate now it's clearly a compatibility issue between Toolset and that Theme.
I'll create a test task to check Genesis Themes with blocks.
I am not sure about prolonged plans to maintain Views, right now we do, and we intend as far I know to proceed.
This question is probably better answered by more insightful employees at Toolset.
I can ask my team leader to answer you here next week about this if you want?
Thank you. Yes it may be helpful for your team leader to reply.
I am also concerned, IF (a big if LOL!) I were to switch to blocks, what would happen to all my current views? If you have to do slides and grids through a page will they simply break as there is no page there?
I am certainly not going to switch now as it does not appear to be completely stable, particularly with my Genesis child themes.
I would, however, be very grateful if you could set up an example Slider
If you switch to blocks nothing happens to your current Views or content.
You can even still use that if using Blocks, and you can also still edit it.
I am not sure what you mean by "If you have to do slides and grids through a page will they simply break as there is no page there?"
Can you elaborate on this?
For setting up an example slider I'll need access to your site, and permission to create views and pages.
Do you have some images already added to the posts to slide?
Hi, my second tier actually already tested Genesis with Toolset Blocks and it resulted that the styles were applied just fine.
I'll give it a quick spin with WooCommerce as well, could you, however (if still available) create a copy of your site and send it to me, so I can see the issue quickly?
You can see here how to create a copy: https://toolset.com/faq/provide-supporters-copy-site/
I've enabled private fields for this to be submitted safely to us.
Hi Beda. First of all sorry for the delay. I have had internet problems and it took me all yesterday and most of today to upload wordpress and plugins to test site!! Because of that I am really unable to start messing around with duplicator, and hope it's ok to just give you access to the test site, where you can take necessary copies if needed to.
Please allow me to reply in private simply giving you a link and login details.
This is a completely new and entirely a test site, so you can do whatever you need to! I have created two woocommerce products with images, and several posts with featured image.
The only thing I have customised is the woocommerce products template. NONE of my customisations have worked.
It is supposed to have the product images smaller and floating left, with the product title, body content, price and add to basket to the right of the images, and then the contact form below that.
While the product title displays the correct size, the product price was styled a larger font size and black, and this did not work.
As the images are display full width I have been unable to test the padding.
I hope all this makes sense!!!
I've activated a private reply
We've also confirmed at least 4 issues meanwhile in WooCommerce / Toolset:
- image sizes not respected
- font sizes and styles not respected
- tabs missing
- background colours missing.
I think padding and margins are deactivated on the Image on the Content Template used on products on the site.
Please see the attached screenshot.
Are those the settings you refer to?
You mention a gallery but I could not spot it.
Could you link me to it?
Related to the #2 and #3 in the initial question, do you need more details related to those tasks?
I had to recreate the site as when I decided I would not bother with blocks. I obviously just forgot to enable to the padding simply because the images wouldn't resize when setting it to medium.
The gallery is the product gallery (large image with thumbnails) that I am unable to resize so it floats left. You mentioned that's a bug
Yes, I still need details on #2 & #3. Is there an article yet on making a slide show in blocks?
1) on a post using images attached to post
2) on widget slider showing featured image of several posts with link to post
At the moment I do feel it's a waste of my time trying to change to blocks until those problems you mention are fixed, it's very frustrating.
When I install blocks on a site that has been using views, it deactivates wp-views, so how do I access the views already created, ie sliders, custom filters?
The Floats of the Imag Gallery in WooCommerce are a known issue, right.
We will solve this in future releases
There is no documentation for Blocks on how to create sliders, but there is one for classic Views https://toolset.com/documentation/user-guides/views/creating-sliders-with-types-and-views/
You can create a slider in the block edit experience by creating a View, that has pagination activated, and uses an AJAX updated pagination method (this can be set in the Views Block inspector)
You can use for this either Fields (images added to a post in fields) or Featured Images, in the View loop when listing all posts.
For a slider to look nice, you'd need to set pagination to one item a time.
For sliders with thumbnails and alike, the repeating field/gallery block is recommended instead, which will use Repeating Fields of every single post.
PS:
There is a video here about how to create sliders with blocks

My issue is resolved now. Thank you!
The difficulty is that there are still so many things that are still not working correctly in Blocks.
