Symptoms

There is an issue related to using a Post Reference Field and happens in the following case:

  • You have a Post Reference Field that connects one post to the other. Let’s say you connect Post A to Post B.
  • You trash Post B.

What happens is that the Post Reference Field is cleared for the Post A. This is correct because you just moved Post B to trash so the connection was also removed.

However, the problem is that now you also cannot connect any other post to the Post A even though the Post Reference Field is empty.

This does not happen if you permanently delete the post from Trash. It only happens if you trash the post (i.e. it is moved to Trash).

Workaround

You can restore the trashed post and remove the connection in the Post Reference Field. Do this by clicking the X to cancel the relationship and save the post. You can then proceed to trash the post or permanently delete it from the Trash.
