I am trying to sort by a custom date field. There isn't really much to explain- obviously the August event should be first, based on the sort date. However, whether I set ascending or descending makes no difference, so not sure what the problem is.

Can you please share admin access details so that I can review what is going wrong with your setup.

I would also eventually need to request temporary access (WP-Admin and FTP) to your site. Preferably to a test site where the problem has been replicated if possible in order to be of better help and check if some configurations might need to be changed.

I checked on your install and I found that you are using the plugin "Post Types Order" and as soon as I disable that plugin I can see it displays the correct posts with order:
