I found this topic and wondered if it would be my solution, but I don't know exactly what I need to do to test it:

"Dear Mark,

Lets say you have created 2 custom fields: pdf-thumbnail and pdf-file. The code you need in your Content Template is:

1
2
3
<a href="[types field="pdf-file" raw="true"][/types]">
[types field="pdf-thumbnail"][/types]
</a>
Please let me know if you are satisfied with my answer and if I can help you with any other questions you might have.

Regards,
Caridad"

Also, I only want my users to have to attach their pdf file and an image/thumbnail of that pdf to be generated along with the link to open it in a new window.

Hi David,

1. I believe you are following this topic: https://toolset.com/forums/topic/attaching-a-link-of-a-pdf-to-a-featured-image/
>> This is for displaying image and linked the image to pdf file.

2. Can you please clarify that you want to allow user to attach their pdf file and an image/thumbnail of that pdf using CRED form? OR you want to allow logged in users to attach their pdf file and an image/thumbnail of that pdf from wp dashboard?

Looking forward to help you.
Thank you

From what I could read in the forum it looks like what I'm trying to do isn't possible, so I am going to tie the rtMedia plugin to my posts to achieve my result.
