[Resolved] Key for Staging URL

This thread is resolved. Here is a description of the problem and solution.

Problem:
Do you need separate site keys for the staging and production versions of a site?

Solution:
Yes. The keys are URL-specific so different environments at different URLs will need different keys. You can optionally add the keys to the wp-config.php file where you might include an environment switcher.

Hi there,

If I have an active key for a staging URL, would I be able to use the same license key when I switch to the _real_ URL?

Right now, my placeholder URL is:

hidden link

But eventually, it will be: hidden link

I've registered 2 keys, but do I just need one?

Thanks,

Hi there

No, you need a unique key for each installation, because the key itself is generated using the URL and so can only work for the URL it was created for.

I hope that is clear.

Thanks, Nigel.

So, when it's time to move the WP install from the staging URL to the "real" URL via something like All-in-One WP Migration, would I switch the key associated with the "real" domain in my wp admin?

Yes, that's correct.

You can provide the key as a constant in your wp-config.php file: https://toolset.com/faq/how-to-install-and-register-toolset/#automatic-toolset-registration-using-php

So you could in theory set this up to switch key automatically depending on your environment.

Thanks, Nigel. I will give that a shot! Appreciate your help.
