Is this a large site with lots of data?

Post meta (custom fields) are ill-suited to custom searches, it is a known problem with WordPress that getting a custom field value for some post is optimised and very quick, whereas querying for posts based upon custom field filters is not optimised and very slow.

Taxonomies are optimised for speed when filtering posts, and wherever possible you should use taxonomies if they are going to be used in custom searches.
