We are planning a site which default language will be Finnish. Later we will perhaps localize it also to English (WPML). Now we would like to use Finnish for planning the custom post database and later translate (if it will be the case) also those to English. But is this possible? For some reason I have this impression that always with Toolset+WPML the english has to be the default language. Working with English from the start seems just like a double work for perhaps nothing, if we end up not localizing the site.

Hi, it is definitely possible to use a non-English primary language with Toolset and WPML. There's nothing specific that says you must use English as the primary language with Toolset, so I'm not sure how you have this impression. With that being said, there are a few things you should be aware of. These are not specific to using a non-English primary language, just general things:

1. If you want to use Toolset's post relationships to connect posts, the original content should be created in the primary language. This can be a problem when you allow Users to create posts with Forms. For example, if an English User submits a Form to create a post in English (secondary language), that post's relationships cannot be easily translated into Finnish (primary language) and other secondary languages. It is best to create content in the primary language, establish your post relationships there, then translate the content.

2. Do not use Toolset Layouts. We recommend you do not use Layouts because there are some issues with translation of Layouts now, and they likely will not be resolved in a reasonable amount of time since Layouts is not under active development.

3. There are some issues with translations and Toolset Blocks right now, so it might be best to wait a while to translate your content if you decide to use the Block Editor. Then hopefully these translation issues will be worked out between Toolset and WPML, and it will save you some headache.
