I am trying to: specify another (existing) post by the same author in a CRED Drop-Down menu in order to link two posts together.

e.g. Create a 'Diary Entry' Post using CRED and select one or more 'Pet' Posts linked to it.

One Diary Entry can have many Pets. One Pet can have many Diary Entries.

I suggest you try setup many-to-many relationship between "Diary Entry" and "Pet"
