Every time I try to added the edit button it tells me to make a layout, I go an make a layout and nothing chances
Is there any documentation that you are following?
I have tried to follow the training where they add the edit button to the custom template for gym post but it doesn't work like that for me
Is there a similar example that we can see?

What is the link to your site?

Thanks for the details, I can login into your website.

You are using Toolset Layouts plugin, this plugin is in maintenance status, and has been moved to legacy plugins:
https://toolset.com/account/downloads/#legacy-plugins
It is not recommended to use it in your new projects.

I have done below modifications in your website:
1) Deactivate Toolset Layouts plugin
2) Edit the content template "Template for Assisted Livings 1"
hidden link
3) in the bottom, add a "Fields and text" block, insert the edit form button, see my screenshot edit-form-link.jpg

Test it in front-end, it works fine:
