conditional date not working

hey,
I have this conditional to display a view if the date set in the custom field is greater than today, and if the date has passed - hide the elements:

[wpv-conditional if="( $(wpcf-final-date) gt ('TODAY()') )"]
sale still on
[/wpv-conditional]
[wpv-conditional if="( $(wpcf-final-date) lte ('TODAY()') )"]
sale closed
[/wpv-conditional]

But it isn't working. Is there something I'm doing wrong?
